Pay Attention in the Silence

Poetry Jam
Sounds Of Silence

Silence

People talking without speaking
Not saying what their meaning
Not knowing what their saying
Not thinking before their speaking

People hearing without listening
Not hearing what is said
Not knowing what they heard
Not thinking as they listen

People writing songs that voices never share
People painting paintings never seen
People dancing in the dark
People penning poems never published

And no one dared
And no one cared
And no one shared
no one

Disturb the sound of silence
Disrupted the unthinking public
Displace the inactivity of the mind
no one
Determined enough to say
Pay Attention

  1. smiles...like how you start each stanza with a bit of the song...i think we need something to shake up that silence at times...like your last stanza....

  2. You really used the words to the song well to launch your poem. Your poem builds to a crescendo in the last stanza.

  3. Love this, Rae Ann. I agree, too many people talk before thinking.

  4. No one to deter but each other! Speaking the silence is something less provocative! Nicely Rae!

  5. ....ah, the language of silence is def of different advantages & disadvantages... it depends on who use it & who receives it... how it is used & to whom it is used... but silence must always create peace more than to solicit disorder & misunderstanding & confusion... smiles... loved this...

  7. Wow, this blew me away Rae! Love it, and even printed it. Wonderful piece. Hugs from Tx and looking forward to our next get together... whenever it is. Leaving for Montana in the morning. Thinking of you and remembering you in my prayers

  12. Yes, "the unthinking public." Creative choice of form here.

  13. I really like this..."Not thinking before their speaking". So many people are hurt by other's words. We should always ask ourselves 'are these words helpful and kind' before we speak them.
"People dancing in the dark" is so poignant and bittersweet.
